Safe Photo Organizer V2
Safe Photo Organizer V2 is a privacy-focused Windows application that organizes large photo and video collections into date-based folders without modifying original files. Built with Python and FastAPI, it scans directories, detects dates using EXIF metadata, filenames, and file timestamps, and generates a reviewable organization plan. Features include SHA-256 file verification, duplicate detection, dry-run execution, media previews, real-time progress tracking, and execution history. All processing is performed locally on the user's machine.
The challenge
Organizing large collections of photos and videos manually can be time-consuming and increases the risk of misplaced or accidentally modified files. Media dates may also be missing or inconsistent across metadata, filenames, and file-system timestamps. The challenge was to develop a reliable local application that identifies date information, presents a clear organization plan, and protects original files throughout the process.
What we did
We developed Safe Photo Organizer V2 as a local Windows web application using Python, FastAPI, and JavaScript. The system recursively scans selected directories, detects dates from EXIF metadata and filenames, evaluates conflicting evidence, and generates an immutable plan for user review. We implemented copy-only execution, SHA-256 verification, hash-based duplicate detection, destination conflict handling, dry-run previews, and real-time execution updates. Additional capabilities include image and video previews, operation history, and pause, resume, and cancel controls for approved operations. A test suite is included to validate core application behavior.
The results
The project provides a structured, safety-first workflow for organizing local photo and video collections. Its review-before-execution approach, copy-only processing, and SHA-256 verification help users organize media while preserving source files. The application also includes automated tests, with 13 passing tests reported in the repository documentation, alongside detailed progress tracking and operation history.
